I like to keep as busy as possible in these worrisome times. Attila will be returning to work next week. I am so very grateful that he is feeling better. I do worry about exposure to the virus in the workplace, but it is best not to dwell on that danger, as there is no way to avoid the risk.
We had a hard frost last night, the temperature dipped below freezing. This morning there was ice on the bird bath. At the last minute Attila decided to cover the plants that were still producing. And he was so glad he did, as many plants perished in the cold last night. It is that time of year. But the covered plants will live on for another week or so, until the next hard frost arrives.
Although the temperature dipped below freezing last night, the temperature inside the house dropped only one degree. When we retired for the night the thermometer read 23C, and when checked in the morning it read 22C. The heating system has not been turned on yet. It was lovely and toasty inside, when we came back in from the back porch, where we sat while enjoying our morning coffee… wearing parkas.
The garden harvest is still the main focus of our lives here at Mist Cottage. On Thursday I canned 4 liters of Tomatoes. On Friday I canned 4 500-ml jars of Cowboy Candy (candied Jalapeno Peppers). I thought today would be focused on other kinds of projects, how wrong I was. This morning I canned 4 500-ml jars of Salsa Verde. This afternoon I made 2 quarts of vegetable broth, which was frozen in containers in the freezer. This evening five 250-ml jars of Lemon Orange Marmalade were canned. The lemon and oranges were purchased over three weeks ago, to use in the making of Mincemeat, and there were four oranges and one lemon left over. It felt good to preserve them, all safe and sound in jars for Christmas treats.
Tomorrow a very large batch of Green Tomato Chow Chow will be canned. The 10 pounds of Green Tomatoes, and 5 pounds of Onions, have all been chopped and are sitting overnight in brine. In the morning the Tomatoes and Onions will be rinsed, put in a large pot with apple cider vinegar, sugar, and spices, and cooked for over an hour before canning. In addition, I will be canning more Tomatoes tomorrow.
We are down to our last few empty canning jars now. There is more produce to come in from the garden, the cabbage has yet to come in. The fresh garden cabbage makes outstanding Canned Coleslaw. And we just might get enough Tomatillos for another batch of Salsa Verde.
I had some pictures to include, but they won’t load! Sometimes technology can be frustrating.

That’s good news that you are ‘reaping the rewards’ of all that hard work with the house renovations. A warm house is much better than a cold one that needs heating.
I don’t envy you your winter – I’m feeling cold at the thought of it
Cathy, we are enjoying all the work we have done to secure the structural integrity of the house, ignoring the aesthetic. Warm in winter is far better than pretty and cold 🙂 The winters are intense here, but the winter in Southern Ontario seems almost tropical to us after having lived much further north at the Country House. Still, by February we will be dreaming of milder weather!
So strange…I have not received email notifications when you put up new post s for a few weeks now. I signed up again but still nothing. Is this happening to anyone else?
Anonymous, I will have a look at the settings and try to figure out what the problem is! Thanks for letting me know!
I got several messages in my email so thank you. I notice it showed me as anonymous in my original message to you. It is Eileen Barton. 🙂
Hi Eileen! Glad the email messages are coming through, must have been a reset of defaults in the software when it updated, will have to keep an eye on that!
I got a few notifies all together, of older posts. Glad to get them, whenever they come through.
Thanks for the feedback Joan! It is very annoying when software changes the way it works when it is updated, so glad I became aware of this issue. When the comments stopped coming I though to myself, “this pandemic really has people dampened down, I hope everyone is OK!” Glad to know it is the software that has problems and not the people!!!
Yes, I received 3 notifications today and was happy to get them! I wish we had the longer Autumns we used to get. My cousin in northern Wisconsin has already had snow. I’m still hoping for a warm snap 🙂 All of the work that you did on your house is paying off now with a nice, warm temperature I would guess that when you turn the furnace on, you’ll rettain heat longer too! Have a wonderful day!
Sandy, I wondered what happened over the last few weeks, and was hoping everyone was OK, lol. I will have to keep an eye on the software.
Snow! Shudder. I do hope the winter is a mild one, and that you get a warm snap where you are. When we lived at the country house we often had snow by this time of year, but it usually melted, but by November it was going nowhere until April. Here it seems tropical by comparison.
I am really relieved that the house is retaining heat when it is so cold outside. The last thing we do at night before retiring is to check the interior temperature on the thermostat, and it is the first thing we do when we arise. So far so good! Have a wonderful day Sandy!
I was also wondering where you’d gone as I hadn’t gotten any email notifications in a couple of weeks. So glad you’re still posting. Preserving season has kept me hopping this year though my efforts are modest compared to your industrious self. I’m afraid an overabundance of cucumbers and tomatoes got away from me but they make good compost!
Sandra, thank goodness for those compost piles! Your harvest sounds wonderful, cucumbers and tomatoes are so prolific, they certainly keep a person on their toes.
Luckily I discovered Bernardin’s Dill Slice recipe, on their web site, and have made at least 5 cases of pickles. We preserve a lot of ingredients, and sauces and condiments to make basic food stuff taste special.
I have to keep an eye on this notification software, I think the change in function might have something to do with the developer encouraging a paid update. Happy canning!
