I have been struggling to write this post.
It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that Bex Crowell passed away peacefully on Friday morning, February 11, 2022, at a hospital in Boston.
Although ill, until the last week of her life she continued to crochet beautiful creative hats for the homeless, and also donated them to an animal rescue group for sale as a fundraiser. She also continued to post on Facebook, share her interests, and interact with her friends. Bex often posted comments here, always kind, always compassionate, always interesting.
Bex kept a blog for many years, called Crow Cottage, which she took down a few years ago. She was a wonderful writer.
She leaves behind the love of her life, her husband Paul, and many friends.
She will be dearly missed.
Requiem
Robert Louis Stevenson – 1850-1894
Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.
This be the verse you grave for me:
Here he lies where he longed to be;
Home is the sailor, home from sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.
So sorry about this, Maggie. Though I never met Bex, I became familiar with her through your blog posts so it feels like I knew her slightly. She was one of your most frequent responders. Condolences to her husband Paul, and to you.
Thank you SP. She was a wonderful person, I’ve known her 20 years or more, every new discovery about her, over the years, was a delight.
I forgot to message.
Condolences for the loss of Bex who seemed a very good person to have around. RIP
Oh, how sad! Condolences to her husband and to you, Maggie. Rest in peace, Bex.
Thank you Joannie. Bex was lovely. She was an animal lover, her hats (hunndreds of them) raised funds for a cat rescue organization. She loved her dogs, particularly Collies.
Thank you Eileen. It is very sad to lose Bex, a good friend, and a lovely generous person.
Thanks for posting this Maggie. It’s hard to believe that Bex is gone. She had a passion for helping people and animals with her knitting and crocheting. And her relationship with Paul was inspiring. I’m going to miss her 🙁
I didn’t know Bex as long as you did, but I will miss her cheery posts, too. May she long be remembered, and all those lovely hats be treasured. So many prayers for Paul, during this new lonely phase of his life.
Thanks Sandy, it was a difficult post to write, it makes her absence more real, and you are right, it is hard to believe that she is gone. She remained at home with Paul until just a few days before she passed, so full of love, strong and determined.
Joan, I too will miss her cheery posts, as I missed her blog when she decided to switch to Facebook. I think there will be hundreds of people warm in their hats thanks to Bex, and many animals who find love and shelter as a result of the sale of her hats. Yes, her passing is such a tremendous loss for Paul, prayers for him.
I’ve just sent the following poem to my closest friend, who is on vigil at a hospital where her brother is dying. To me it’s one way of describing what we feel when our loved ones are leaving or have left, and yet we hope they are on their way to someplace better. I’m sorry for your loss, Maggie.
Maggie, thank you for posting this sad news. I recall that it was Bex who suggested the name Mist Cottage.
Thank you Kate. What a lovely poem, such comforting sentiments. I am sending kind thoughts to your friend, such a difficult time for both of them. I too hope we are destined for something better, and I actually think it might be true, at least for kind and compassionate people.
Wendy, you are welcome, this is such sad news. It was Bex who suggested the name Mist Cottage, after our cat Mist. Such a good friend!
That’s so sad. I feel for Paul, with no one to watch for him anymore.
Teri, it is very sad. Apparently Paul hasn’t been taking it well, early days, but I do think he has people around him offering support, a neighbour, the person who handled Bex’s hats, and a close friend of theirs who lives at a distance but is very supportive.
