The temperature is heading down once more. Oddly, it seems to head down with the arrival of the weekends. This time it won’t be as extreme as the -39C low we had a few weeks ago, it is only going down to -18C. Cold enough to make outdoor activities unpleasant.
The extreme low temperatures a few weeks ago provided a test of the new heating system. It worked really well. Now that we know how it will perform, we can simply rely upon it to keep us warm and cozy through the winter months.
It stormed Wednesday night and Thursday morning, so much snow that our road was not really safe to traverse until the plow went by mid-morning. Attila didn’t make it to work on yesterday. Another snow day, the weather is certainly more extreme than we’ve seen it here.
Attila spent the day working on snow removal, there was quite a lot of it to remove. We took advantage of his presence to also begin to organize the basement. The home canned food was tackled. The oldest canned food in the stores is three jars of Chili Sauce, from 2016, still sealed, still good to eat. There are smatterings of other home canned foods made in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. One jar of relish had lost its seal, but did not appear to have gone bad, however, since we have so much relish the contents of the jar were discarded. The rest of the older jars were placed front and centre in the pantry, to be consumed first. Partially empty boxes were consolidated, to create empty boxes in which to store the empty jars. The organization of the food filled jars needs to be changed, but that cannot happen until shelves are built, who knows when that project will get tackled.
Lately on Facebook I have observed sharing in a group, posting many “stupid young people” memes that poke fun at young people for not knowing anything about technologies that were in use a few decades ago. Personally I don’t find them funny or amusing, because they are at the expense of someone else, not my kind of humour. I also do not find humour based on “stupid old people” funny or amusing. I have noted that when “stupid old people” sentiments are expressed, they usually go unchallenged. The recent spate of “stupid young people” sentiments have inspired an uproar of protest. Agism is such a weird phenomenon.

I agree age related so called “humor” is bad. Not funny at all! Stay warm and safe!
Joan, comedians who can make us laugh, without denigrating people or their beliefs, are truly gifted! Thanks for the warm wishes 🙂
DH noted the other day that every winter we seem to mostly have a weekly cycle. This winter is “storm on Thursday” winter. A recent previous winter was “storm on the weekend” winter.
So far, we’ve been relatively lucky that storms on Thursday haven’t been so bad or have been delayed enough that we only had to modify our Thursday morning shopping schedule one time.
I’m shivering just reading your post! Since I grew up in northern Alberta, I get homesick hearing about your weather, but I sit down and take a few deep breaths and the feeling passes!
Diane, I know what you mean about feeling homesick about the weather, these few days remind me of my Granny and Grandpa’s home in the north. The winters there were harsh, I still follow along with goings on in their part of the world, but I don’t want to live there. We tried living with the harsher climate at the Country House, and it did not live up to my childhood memories… we were the adults having to chop the wood, light the fires, shovel the snow, etc. My memories of my Grandparents are warm and wonderful, but I now know it is because of the people, and it just wasn’t the same without them.
The weather at Mist Cottage is only intermittently frigid, little reminders of the north, so I don’t mind them so much.
But oh the memories… I know what you mean!
Teri, it was just recently that I noticed that the storms and bad weather are coming at the end of the week, usually diminishing through the weekends. I find this strange. Sure enough, I looked at the weather report and the temperature is supposed to take another one-night dive on Friday night. I find it sort of weird.
