Other Lives

I spend all of my time doing things I am good at, well mostly anyway. I have developed skills, and enjoy these projects and activities. It is a good life.

At one point in my life I spent my time doing things that I excelled at, things I was passionate about. I remember that passion, those doings, those achievements, with great joy and sadness. It was another life. A lost life.

I remember the grief of that loss, but I no longer feel it.

I’ve forged a good life for myself, a life centred more on contentment than passion, as I’ve moved into old age. This hasn’t been by choice, but by necessity.

And I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had; the opportunities to excel, to experience passion; and the opportunities to grow into a rhythm, a flow, a meander.

Contrast, I think it allows me a very deep appreciation, for the beautiful landscapes of all the lives I’ve lived.

A life of contentment. Most definitely! That’s also my aim now, to make a life of contentment. I have a house that keeps us safe and warm/cool and dry. I have the appliances for the cooking we want to do. We maintain it well, so the cleaning on a weekly basis is minimal unless there’s something special going on. And now we’re slowly adding in things for outdoor living, like a shed for tools and maybe shortly a pergola and patio.

I spent 25 years following my various creative interests, turning them into income. But I’ve stepped away from that now and am content to slowly mold this house into a home that gives us room to enjoy our retirement.
