Cold and windy out there today, 10C but with the wind and the damp it feels so much colder than that.
Attila took the opportunity to harvest his horseradish today. All it took was a shovel and bucket and a little bit of time. He is peeling it as I write, my eyes can feel it, and I am sitting in the other room. It will be processed in a blender, out on the back porch, then prepared and frozen in small batches.
I’ve been up to little things, like slicing bread, and making another batch of Kombucha.
I recently had a biopsy taken. It left a sizable hole in my skin, which is healing very nicely. However, I have developed a very irritating reaction to bandages, the glue in them I believe. When we travelled to Toronto I put a bandage over the biopsy wound, knowing I would be using public restrooms. Sure enough, the whole area is red and swollen and so so itchy. The bandage was on my skin from 7:00 a.m. until 5 p.m., which it seems is enough time to cause the reaction. The wound is fine, the contact dermatitis will linger for weeks.

Maggie, welcome to the world of paper tape users. Those adhesive reactions can be miserable. I just hope you don’t blister.
Wendy, thank you! I’d not heard of paper tape, it is now on my shopping list! And gauze too, unless there is another product I don’t know anything about that works better. It is interesting that the GP said nothing about alternative products I could use, I will make sure to tell him all about what works!
My adhesive reactions are horrible, I’ve have to have so many scans and stuff like that, and afterwards I am covered in itchy welts that take weeks to heal. I get this reaction even from the cables on the heart monitor that are laid across my chest, big lines of welts. This is new for me, not sure if it is all the medications I am taking, or just old age. I am so glad to hear of an alternative!
Maggie, if it’s easier to have a regular bandage, another trick is to put down the paper tape first and then have the bandage stick to the paper tape. It doesn’t always work but is worth a try.
I don’t think I’m as sensitive as you are, but I’ve lost skin to those EKG sticky things. Gotta have some kind of neutral cream to take them off.
Maggie, while in my bathroom just now, I saw the other thing in my arsenal for those times when paper tape is not enough. I’ve had decent results with silicone tape, sometimes called scar tape.
Wendy, great tip on how to use regular bandages! For the larger ones I already have in the medicine cabinet, I will be able to use them up. I hadn’t thought of a neutral cream to take the adhesive off, will have to look into that, I’ve been using soap and water, without a lot of success.
I’ll also research silicone tape.
I really appreciate the tips Wendy, the contact dermatitis can be overwhelming when I have multiple tests that use adhesive products!
I hear you with the stinging horseradish eyes, Maggie. I used to live not far from “the horseradish capital of the world.” You could always tell harvest time. You couldn’t drive by the town without tearing up.
Teri, horseradish really does pack a punch! I remember the first time I chopped it up in the food processor, we had to vacate the house for a while, after opening the windows. Yesterday, suddenly there was a lot of coughing and choking going on in the kitchen, the chopping had taken place on the back porch, Attila was only pouring the chopped horseradish into a pot to cook it. My eyes were watering as I sat in the living room, lol!
I hope the healing will not take as long as you expect! (I don’t like horseradish, either.) Julia likes some spicy stuff, Siracha sauce and the like. She can have it, all of it, no need to share.
Joan, thanks for the healing wishes! I had to laugh at “no need to share”, which is exactly how I feel about horseradish, and Siracha sauce too!
