Snowbow

It is snowing heavily, and thankfully there is no need to leave the property. There will a lot of shovelling going on here over the next two days!

I worked yesterday, which meant that the car was completely clear of snow last night, when it was safely parked in the drive. This is what it looked like this morning, and it is still snowing, and windy, and cold… We are busy cooking and baking and tending fires. Mist is fast asleep, the best way to avoid all this activity!

We were sitting in the living room this morning, and the sun came out. But it was still snowing heavily. I basked in the sun, and scowled at the snow; Attila, watching me and laughing, said, “where is the snowbow!” We had to chuckle at the thought of snowbows, and wouldn’t it be nice, if in winter they actually existed in colour, to add some variety and excitement to the relentless white!

Savoury oatmeal, I have been giving it a try. This morning’s breakfast was Savory Oatmeal With Soft Cooked Egg and Cheddar. This dish was passable, but nothing to look forward to. I do not eat very much, and I can never eat out except at McDonalds, so it is important that everything I do eat provides a pleasant experience. The search for a savoury oatmeal dish continues!

Lunch gave us a chance to try this Oatmeal Soda Bread. It came out of the oven at 10:00 a.m. and smelled wonderful. Why wait for lunch? It became the midmorning snack, with better butter, and was too dry for my taste. But with a small side dish of homemade applesauce and a spoon, it was transformed into a treat. It might be good with soup. It has been divided into four smaller sections, three of which will go into the freezer to eat with soup later in February, and one remains in the bread box to eat with tomorrow’s promised turkey soup. Attila promised that the turkey soup would be ready for dinner tomorrow night.

Well, it snowed all day! The light is failing now, and it is time to bundle up the windows and protect the heat we have from dissipating into the wind. It is only going down to -18C tonight, so that is a relief!

My comments seem to have a familiar beginning these days: WOW! On the mountain, life comes to a halt with 2 inches of snow – and here you are nearly buried! I like your pioneer spirit and creativity! Bravo! (Your posts also inspire more explanation points than usual.)

Amazing. Never see anything like it.

Thanks to a load of snow the other day here in New England, we had an ice dam develop over our front door with resultant drip-drip-dripping onto our floor! Finally convinced husband to scrape the snow off the roof of the house using a telescoping gadget I’d bought years ago and which he has never used. Finally! Something I did was right! The dripping stopped as soon as the snow was removed. Winter: Bah Humbug!
