It has been a very odd day.
I woke early in the morning with a stomach ache. No accounting for it, I have no idea why it was happening. By mid morning it had dissipated. I hope it does not come back.
Then, soon after that annoying little malady disappeared, another sprang up to take its place. I had a headache by lunch time. This was distressing, because the anti-inflammatory cream I am using on my knee advises against taking any painkillers while it is in use. If I get a headache, I am stuck with it.
Late in the afternoon I became aware of my bangs touching my eyebrows. Aha, that will do it! As soon as my bangs grow long enough to touch my eyebrows, I get headaches, real bangers. I grabbed the kitchen scissors and headed for the bathroom mirror. Inelegantly, I chopped off about an inch of my bangs, it wasn’t terribly even, but it was well above my eyebrows. Within a half an hour the headache had disappeared. I would love to look well groomed, but will have to put up with not being quite up to snuff in the looks department. If I avoid mirrors, the appearance of my hair will have no impact on how I see myself.
My last haircut was in August 2014. It was a great cut, but it cost more than a week’s groceries for two, and then the stylist expected a tip on top of that. I won’t be doing that again any time soon, probably never. Why women’s hair cuts have to cost so much I will never know. The “up selling” is also distressing. I don’t want anything but a decent haircut. I don’t want special shampoos, or conditioners, or colour added, or curls added, or hair straightened, or hair waxed off my body, or my fingernails painted, or anything other than a simple trim. So far, I have not found a reasonably priced place to get a hair cut, that actually does a consistently good job. Every time I try the “in and out hair salons” I regret it terribly. Apparently cutting hair is indeed rocket science.
I managed to get out to my Yoga class today. I enjoyed it. The class is small, and the women are all friendly. They greet me by name, which is very special, because this winter it only happens once a week or so, someone greeting me by name, quite literally, unless Attila manages to make the trip from the country house, or Terra makes a brief visit.
Luna and Janus, when they visited with the Grandbabies, also brought along Bim the dog. Bim sheds. Bim sheds a lot. Today I got out my 1961 Electrolux deluxe vacuum cleaner and went to work. Thirty minutes later the floors were cleared of dog hair, cat hair, chalk from chalk board the children were drawing on while they were here, and cracker crumbs from the snack I gave them while they were waiting for their supper. I also picked up a few pieces of chalk that escaped the cleanup that they did just before they left.
Cold nights are on the way! Tonight the temperature is predicted to dip to -18C at the country house. Chop that wood Attila! Here at the city house, the temperature dips are barely discernible as the thermostat sits on the wall and works its magic.

Whaaaaat????!!!
“As soon as my bangs grow long enough to touch my eyebrows, I get headaches”
I’ve been getting a lot of migraines lately, and my bangs are too long while my hairdresser’s been out of commission.
It makes no sense, but … what the heck! Anything is possible.
I think I’ll go find some scissors and see what I can do. I’ve been wearing a hat at work for a week, to keep the hair off my face without using a hair comb and bobby pins. Not being a big hat-gal, I am beginning to get anxious to chop this mop off.
I know Kate! It sounds improbable, but in my case at least, when those bangs reach down to a certain point the headaches begin. I have been aware of this for sometime. I beggars belief, and I know of no explanation for it. Could be that I am a modern day “princess and the pea”.
If cutting those bangs has the same results for you, well that would really be something I would say!
I do consider shaving my head from time to time, that would give me at least four or five months before the headaches came back.
In our area we have First Choice for haircuts. I think the women’s hair cuts are currently $15. (Haven’t had mine cut since last summer but I need to go soon.) They may wet your hair when they cut it but they don’t wash it unless you ask for it, and then I’m sure it would cost more.
I can see where your bangs might begin to bother you. Maybe the extra weight of it pulls just enough on your scalp.
I do tend to be a “princess and the pea” type, almost literally, since the smallest nub of something in or under the covers can cause me discomfort and a lack of sleep.
Funny you should mention bangs. I’ve been debating the last day or so if I should get bangs the next time I have my hair cut.
Teri, I don’t know if it is the weight, or the sensation of hair on the eyebrow. Luckily I don’t need to understand it to fix it! 🙂
The thing about bangs I find, is that they are in constant need of trimming. It can get annoying. With my hair they don’t seem to grow out with any degree of grace.
My hair grows down into my face, so having bangs is the only way to keep it out of my face. My hair seems to mimic my personality, it just can’t be tied up for very long before it starts to escape and do things its own way. I can’t keep it out of my face, so I cut the front into bangs.
I have had at least a dozen haircuts at First Choice over the years. The experience is sometimes bad, as once the woman who was cutting my hair and another employee got into a verbal slanging match while I was sitting in the chair, that wasn’t fun. They were both wielding scissors around our heads as their emotions intensified. That happened almost ten years ago and I haven’t forgotten it. All of the haircuts I have had at First Choice have been mediocre at best, and within days I heartily regret ever having passed through their doors. $15 is a more than reasonable amount to pay for a haircut, at that price I did not resent leaving a tip, even though the haircut was not to my liking. I figured the employees there are doing their best, they can’t be paid all that much, and they have a lot of pressure to move people through in volume.
What amazes me is that there is such a gap. There is the $15-plus-tax-and-tip haircut, and then it jumps to almost $60-plus-tax-and-tip, or more, at a hairstylist, as well as enduring all the “up selling” crap that goes on. And then there is maze of pricing at the salons for junior stylists, and then the more prestigious stylists, the price going up and up and up. I think about shaving my head every time I look for someone to cut my hair!
My fantasy is that I find someone like Michael, who used to cut my hair when I lived in the city. He understood my hair, and what would look good for me. He charged a moderate amount of money for a cut, $27-plus-tax, did a great job, never tried to sell me any additional products or services, and didn’t expect a tip to remain on friendly terms. I didn’t know what I had with Michael until it was gone!
If you lived near me, I’d cut your hair for free! I used to cut friends’ hair all the time when I worked in offices, but haven’t for a while now. I have cut my own hair for just about all my life with a few rare exceptions but those were many decades ago, in a different life… I’ve never understood the high prices – have you ever thought of going into a men’s barbershop and asking for a trim? Lots of men have longish hair and they get served… it seems that barbers are much more affordable – I think Paul’s only charges $15 for a haircut.
I totally get it about the bangs touching your eyebrows – same with me!!! Although I don’t actually get a headache but I do get very antsy and nervous when they touch! I cannot stand to even look at people with bangs (or “fringes” as they say in the UK) that go down past the eyebrows and even down past the eyes! Covering the eyes! How can they see? How can they stay sane for 5 seconds? It drives me berserk to see it. And my hair grows down into my face just like you described… so I totally get it.
I loved this: “…as the thermostat sits on the wall and works its magic…” knowing your story about heating systems and the two houses, that was quite a great little combination of words Maggie… I love my thermostat… it’s got big letters on it (for us geezers) and to go up a notch it “clicks” so there is no guessing – just click once or twice either way… love it.
Bex, thanks for the offer! If only! 🙂
The last haircut I had was by a fellow who cuts men’s hair, he charges them $15, or so the reviews said, so I though I was safe. When I was asked for $60 CASH, I was in a state of shock. I paid it, and he was rude because I didn’t leave a tip. Loved the haircut though. Maybe I’ll try another barber.
I have foolish faith that I will find the perfect person to cut my hair, at a price I can afford!
Your thermostat sounds like the cat’s meow!
I cut DH’s hair as needed. I can’t say how well I’d do with women’s styles, though. With DH it’s just take an inch or 2 off, layer front to back on the sides and top to bottom in the back. That’s pretty simple.
Sorry to hear you’ve had such poor service at First Choice. Guess I’ve been lucky with the hairdressers we’ve had here.
I wore bangs for a short 5 or so years of my life – actually quite recently. It was a leap of faith to experiment and I loved them! If for anything else, my bangs cosmetically covered some wrinkles. 🙂 I never had problems with them, but in the past when my hair was long, I’ve used scrunchies too tight and had headaches – but that was an easy problem to fix.
There is a dear mountain woman who now comes to my home and cuts my hair every now and then.
Reenie, your current hairstyle is beautiful! The pictures you have posted from your past show that you have always had great hair!
Ah yes, bangs do cover the forehead, covering wrinkles!
