The past is a solid.
As I sat with my coffee this morning, I experienced a wrinkle in time. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, one hand embracing the warm cup, the other the cup handle, I felt complete contentment and wonder. This was a place, a feeling, I had been to before, when I was a single mother of two girls, working on my PhD, and living with endless demands on my time and my thoughts, grabbing at me every waking moment. At that time, to sit quietly with a cup of coffee, with my own thoughts, was a cherished luxury, enjoyed but a few fleeting minutes now and then. Oh how I enjoyed it! And this morning, coffee in hand, I felt that same peace and gratitude, to have me in my life.
It seems to me that the past is a solid, a piece of time and place and experience that, once experienced, takes on a solid shape and sinks and settles into the sands of time. Occasionally the winds of our fate move the mountainous dunes to reveal the gems buried there. That is what happened to me this morning.

“If it were not for time everything would happen at once. If it were not for geography everything would happen to me.”
Found this scribbled on the wall of a toilet stall at the “By The Way Cafe” at Brunswick and Bloor, in Toronto, in 1993. Being a Geographer, I loved it.
Maggie,
It sounds like bliss. I have experienced it only once. I am so happy for you.

..”to have me in my life.” I like the way you put that! A simple statement, yet so meaningful!
Lovely.
Thanks Nora, wishing you many more such experiences!
Diane, in those years I lost myself to my responsibilities. I always knew though, that I was in here somewhere!
Thanks Kate!
🙂
I love those moments of pur “me” contentment . So rare, so precious, such a gift to enjoy and treasure.
I agree Lee Ann, such a gift!
Beautiful moments, thank you for sharing them! (Love the quote, too!)
Thanks Joan!
I liked that quote so much that I have remembered it verbatim for more than twenty years. I remember exactly where and when I read it, and laughing out loud at the time.
I’m out of sync with this post but wanted to say we hung a damp towel in the bedroom last night and it worked wonders on our very static-y sheets. Thanks, all!
Thanks for the info Teri, glad to hear that works. Actually, I hadn’t thought of hanging a wet towel in the bedroom… tonight!
We will need to do that too!!
