We are experiencing a serious snow storm at the moment, which is supposed to intensity tonight, then dissipate tomorrow. The roads are treacherous, and there have been some serious accidents on the 401 near Mallorytown, involving cars, transport trucks, hazardous materials, and personal injuries. To the south of us our US neighbours are experiencing even worse winter conditions. Stay warm!
The weather is almost always unpleasant in some way in mid-March.
A quiet day here at Mist Cottage, working a little on my book, and practicing crochet. I think will be looking for a more suitable yarn, and I might have some stored away under a pile of totes. The yarn I have has been adequate for learning the first basics, but now that I am learning to do a single crochet stitch, my results do not resemble the videos and images at all, so it is difficult to figure out what they are talking about. I switched to a smaller hook, and that helped to create a starting chain that looked remotely like the ones in the demonstrations. But the chain is so fine that I need a magnifying glass in addition to my glasses to see what the stitches well enough to work with them. I think I am catching on though, it is the turning that is confounding me, for the moment. My rows get shorter and shorter and shorter; I am pretty sure this is not desirable. Tomorrow is another day!
The roads were dusted with snow when Attila left this morning. Now the storm is picking up, and it looks like Attila’s commute home will be challenging. I look forward to seeing him when he gets here!

When doing single crochet, and turning… chain up 1, turn, and put hook into the nearest stitch to the hook…do not skip over that first hole… and go into the hole, yarn over, pull thru (2 yarns on hook), yarn over, and pull thru both yarns. And relax. And get a thicker yarn…it will make ALL the difference to you. I really don’t like crocheting with skinny yarn which I’ve been doing today just to keep myself busy…
We were lucky and only got 3.5 inches of snow last night, and nothing since then. Sending best wishes that Attila gets home unscathed!
Thanks Bex! I had been skipping that fist hole! I am going to get Attila to help me sort through the totes tonight, to see if we can find that other yarn I know we have. The yarn I bought for $1 is baby yarn, very fine, time to switch it out for something more substantial. My new hooks should be arriving in the next two weeks, I am watching out for them.
I hope the weather isn’t too bad where you are! Attila said it was a nerve wracking drive home, but he made it and was only 15 minutes late. Keep warm!
Teri, it is still snowing like crazy, and blowing, and supposed to go on all night. I passed your wishes along to Attila. He is home, only 15 minutes later than usual, said it was a miserable drive.
If you can get a “chunky” yarn, that would be ideal for you to get going as the stitches show up much better… and that baby yarn (I have some and probably will never use it) is horrid to use… the older you get! I used to crochet with the tiniest size hook there is, very fine cotton thread to make doilies, and OMG, even though I was only in my 20’s, it was hard!
Bex when the weather clears I will go and have a look around at what is available here. Chunky it is! My Mom crocheted my sister and I cotton dresses when we were young, it boggles my mind. We loved those dresses. I have a magnifier lamp that I could use to crochet, but I’d rather not!
I guess all you can do is snuggle in and keep warm…and busy, of course!
Diane, that is exactly what we did, warm and comfortable in Mist Cottage. The storm ended Wednesday morning, and the snow is already melting. It will be cold for a few more nights, but the daytime temperature was just above freezing this afternoon, perfect for a walk! Fingers crossed that that was our last big snowfall of the season! 🙂
