The dental assessment passed uneventfully. The x-ray revealed that the tooth is worth saving and the dentist feels a filling can save it. There is no immediate risk of infection. The staff that work at the Dental Office are friendly and helpful. That is all good news. Then the bad news starts. The two teeth that were x-rayed either side of the chipped tooth have cavities that need filling. These cavities have developed in the last year. I have to wonder what other cavities and issues are in that mouth of mine. The cost to fill all the three teeth comes to over $500, not a fortune but a significant proportion of our cash-above-fixed-costs over the next three months. If there were more fillings to be done it would be touch and go as to finding the money to do them. So, cost is an issue that can be overcome in the short term, with a bit of sacrifice, if this is the only unexpected expense in the budget. The other issue, my allergy, isn’t such an easy thing to deal with. The dentist assured me there were no allergens in the freezing that he uses (he didn’t know what my allergen was when I named it, so his assurances made a very poor impression), and when I explained my concerns about infection and antibiotics, he first asked me if I had auto-immune disease (NO, read my chart fella) and then he expressed the opinion that the side effect warnings on antibiotics represent an insignificant risk and are nothing to worry about. Our interaction did not leave me with a good feeling. Nothing for it but to square my shoulders, plaster a smile on my face and head back into the dentist’s office for my first filling, in two weeks time. This first filling is the easy one, filling the chipped tooth without freezing; little risk of getting bumped off. Today I am feeling worn down by the constant battle to keep the food supply and health care industries from ending my life prematurely. Beautiful day here, as was yesterday, the sun is shining and there are still some magnificently coloured leaves on the trees. My drive to the dentist was very enjoyable, as was the drive back home. I even managed to pick up a few groceries while I was in town, including some fresh broccoli. Attila and I love fresh broccoli and cauliflower cooked to tenderness and topped with a herbed cheese sauce. My mouth is watering as I write! My sourdough project is a bust. I started it a two in the afternoon on Wednesday, and now, two days later, no action. I’ll throw it out and start again. Time to look for a different set of instructions. My genealogy project is lots of fun at the moment. I have just found my Great Grandmother’s brother and his family. I did not know they existed! I have yet to locate their parents, my Great Great Grandparents, but I have lots of ideas on where to begin looking. I need to make a visit to the local Family History Centre; they provide access to ancestry.ca where I can view copies of original documents, maybe next week? I have now converted all the vinyl albums that Attila fetched from the storage closet from Analog to Digital and burned them onto CDs. This morning I took advantage of the excellent light beside the sliding glass door to photograph the album covers front and back. When I have enough photos, I will burn them on a CD. Time to tote the converted albums back to storage and fetch some fresh ones to start all over again. |
