At
noon the temperature outside the kitchen window was
-1 C. Right now it is -18 C and it is expected to dip
to -28 C before morning. Attila has set two fires
in the masonry fireplace already today, and is now splitting
wood for a third burn. He also burned a fire in the
little cast iron stove in the basement
for
several
hours. So far the house is warm and cozy, but as the
cold snap continues it will cool down considerably.

It has been a very quiet day. It began with snowfall and ended with a beautiful sunset. Because I knew the temperature was going to fall like a stone today, I took my walk early in the morning, while it was -4 C. This morning I decided to bake a couple of loaves of bread to store in the freezer, just in case we lose our hydro again. Sandwiches are a great fast food and very easy to prepare when the power goes down. I also charged the cell phone and the emergency LED work light; we are as prepared as we can be for a power failure. |

I had never seen one of these beetles before last September. This is the second one I've found in the house this week! If anyone can identify this beetle, please let me know.
