Winter Boots

The first day of December brought with it our first day of snowfall. It snowed for a few hours this morning.

Yesterday I was outside in my work sandals. Today I was outside in my winter boots! The snow arrived early this morning, not a lot, and the strong sun is already melting it away, although it is still cold. There are significant snow storms to the north of us, and to the south of us, but only a light dusting of snow here. This is such a contrast with the country house, and looking at the country house weather right now, it is one of the hardest hit by large volumes of snow. We are so glad to be here in a more southerly location, with our thermostat, and retired so that we needn’t try to travel when the weather is terrible.

Yesterday Attila put up some outdoor Christmas lights, so cheerful.

Last week I we travelled to a nearby city for my eye exam, a bit of deterioration but the Doctor said I didn’t have to have new glasses, although I could as the prescription has changed. I thought about it and probably will skip having new glasses for this year. I have to go back in a years time, I will wait and see then if my eyesight has deteriorated even more, I might want new glasses then. The Doctor showed me an image of my giant floater, a result of the posterior vitreous detachment over a year ago. It hasn’t gotten any smaller, and it still annoys me from time to time, but my brain is slowly erasing it’s presence.

Attila has put the garden to rest for the winter. Yesterday he emptied and put the last rain barrel into storage. The only produce from the garden now is the squash. All of the squash plants were volunteers this past summer, the squash is a bonus crop. Every day I have it for lunch, peeled, sliced thin, tossed with a bit of olive oil and herbs, then air fried. It is a real treat. Attila thinks we have enough to serve for lunch every day until Christmas.

Last week we lost our power for a morning. Our internet setup did not appreciate this interruption, and it has taken me many days to try and get it sorted out. I’ve made enough progress to be connected now, but there is still some fiddling with the ISP modem to be done before things are totally back to normal. My nose was a bit out of joint for those few days I was working on it, we were offline for considerable amounts of time. Instructions can often assume too much, making directions challenging to follow. But here I am, happily writing, so all is well that ends well.

It also seems that our Postal Strike here in Canada is causing a bit of strain on the system. We ordered something from amazon that got delivered to the neighbours house. Luckily he brought it over for us, and it was nice to meet him, they are our new neighbours. The postal strike also means we cannot mail the usual birthday cards, and Christmas cards to the Grandbabies, oh well, better late than never I suppose.

I contacted amazon to let them know about the issue, and ended up talking in circles with an AI personality. At one point I asked, “are you reading what I am writing?”, and it started in again from the beginning. I ended up with a refund, that I had refused earlier in the “conversation”. What a totally failed communication that was!!

This morning Attila wanted to celebrate the arrival of December and snow. He got busy in the kitchen and rustled up a batch of blueberry pancakes, with a small side of peameal bacon. We enjoyed our breakfast with toppings, maple syrup and apple sauce.

I maintain there is much more wonder in science than in pseudoscience. And in addition, to whatever measure this term has any meaning, science has the additional virtue, and it is not an inconsiderable one, of being true.

After eleven years of neglect (because time goes so quickly these days), I got new glasses. I’m determined that after reaching age 66 I should have the yearly check up, and then each year decide yes or no about the glasses only if there’s a big change.

I hope the strike soon resolves to everyone’s satisfaction. (I ordered something from Etsy that’s coming SOME day from Canada.)
